January is one of Coron's driest months, with an average of just 19.2 mm of rain over three rainy days. Island-hopping conditions can be excellent, although a dry sky does not guarantee a calm sea: the northeast monsoon, Amihan, can still make long crossings uncomfortable or unsuitable.
For a first visit, book a classic Coron Island tour covering Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon, ideally early in your stay. Add Malcapuya or the Lusong wrecks only if you have another full tour day and the sea is suitable.
| Month | Average rainfall | Rainy days | Average daily high |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 90.3 mm | 6 | 32.3°C |
| January | 19.2 mm | 3 | 32.5°C |
| February | 22.9 mm | 2 | 32.7°C |
| March | 15.4 mm | 3 | 33.1°C |

Limestone lakes and a shallow wreck in one day, on the shorter Coron Island route.
The shared Ultimate Tour lists Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake, the Skeleton Wreck and reef and beach stops, so you get the limestone scenery and a shallow wreck to snorkel without booking several different trips. If you have only one full day in Coron, choose this kind of circuit over an Island Escapade, which spends much longer travelling out to the white-sand beaches.
Very dry, and warm enough to swim.
January rainfall is far lower than December's 90.3 mm and November's 107.1 mm. The average high is 32.5°C and the average low 23.5°C, warm enough for swimming. A rainy day in these records is one with at least 1 mm of rain in 24 hours. An average is not a forecast for January 2027, and it does not promise clear skies in any given week.
Pack a light dry shirt and a wind-resistant layer for the boat ride after a swim. Shade and sun protection matter even when the breeze makes the air feel cooler.
For a dry-season boat day or a day on land: Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon and Barracuda Lake on Coron Island, the Skeleton Wreck, the Lusong Gunboat and East Tangat wrecks, the outer-island beaches of Malcapuya, Banana Island, Bulog Dos and Ditaytayan, and around Coron Town, Mount Tapyas and Maquinit Hot Springs.
A sunny January morning can still bring a rough crossing.
Amihan brings northeast winds through the core of the cool dry season, and each route feels it differently depending on the wind direction, the open water it crosses, the swell and the islands that shelter it. Coron's climate records come from a land station and say nothing about sea state on individual routes, so no one can give you an honest January cancellation rate.
Put your main sights on the shorter classic Coron Island route, and keep the longer Malcapuya crossing for another day the operator confirms. A lake sheltered by cliffs can look calm even when the sea on the way to it is rough. Our guide to island hopping during Amihan compares the routes.
Longer at your favourite stops, the same sea as everyone else.
The private Coron Island tour (4.93 from 807 reviews, $117 per group of up to two) suits families, small groups, photographers and anyone who wants longer at two or three favourite stops. Its custom route has a different entrance-fee arrangement from its fixed private packages: on the custom route the fees are not included. It is sold as a full day, and a shorter stop list does not on its own make it a shorter charter.
Agree any special departure or return time with the provider in advance. A private boat gives you flexibility when conditions allow, not an exemption from the Coast Guard's instructions.
Two different areas, two different crossings.
Choose the Malcapuya, Banana Island and Bulog Dos tour (4.46 from 98 reviews, from $46) if white sand, shallow-water photography and a lazy day appeal most. The Beaches and Islands Boat Tour with Lunch (4.53 from 107 reviews) pairs Malcapuya with Ditaytayan instead.
Choose a dedicated Reefs & Wrecks day if marine history and snorkelling matter more to you. The shared Reef and Wreck tour visits the Lusong Gunboat, Lusong Coral Garden and East Tangat, but it has only 3.40 stars from 9 reviews, so read recent feedback before you book it.
The two routes cover different areas, with longer travel and their own weather limits; don't assume one will run when the other is grounded. For a family or anyone prone to seasickness, ask about the longest uninterrupted crossing, not just the number of stops.
The New Year weekend is the one date that stands out.
New Year's Day falls on Friday 1 January 2027, giving a long weekend through 3 January. The holiday is set out in Proclamation No. 1427. Hotels and tours may see extra holiday demand that weekend, though that does not mean every departure will sell out. Later in the month you avoid that weekend, but it is still a popular dry-season time to travel.
Nothing in the records shows late January to be calmer or reliably drier than early January. Choose your dates on actual availability and the rest of your trip.
How many full tour days you get, and where the spare one comes from.
Day 1 for arriving, day 2 for the Ultimate Tour, day 3 for Malcapuya or wreck snorkelling, and day 4 for departure. That gives you two full tour days but no dedicated weather buffer.
The extra night leaves a third full day free for a rescheduled tour, a day in town or rest. Our 3 or 4 day Coron itinerary sets out each plan day by day.
Wind and swell matter more than showers.
A light shower does not have to stop a tour. Under a clear sky, though, Amihan wind and swell can make an exposed crossing unsuitable. The route, the boat, the captain's assessment and any maritime directions in force are what count. Check the PAGASA marine gale warnings and confirm your booking with the operator. The Philippine Coast Guard's revised heavy-weather rules govern affected vessel movements, and a private charter cannot sail through an official suspension.
The operator cancelling is not the same as you cancelling because a weather app looks bad. Read your tour's operator-cancellation terms as well as its standard deadline for cancelling yourself, and see our Coron tour cancellations guide for how refunds work.
