January and February are good months for snorkelling in Coron, with very little rain on average, although clear water is never guaranteed. Coron also lets you choose between ordinary reef snorkelling and shallow wrecks you can see from the surface.
Choose the Coron Ultimate Tour if you also want Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon. Choose a dedicated Reefs & Wrecks tour if the Lusong Gunboat, coral gardens and underwater history interest you most. Many of Coron's famous larger WWII shipwrecks are scuba sites, not something you can see from the surface.
| Site | Main attraction | Tour that usually goes there |
|---|---|---|
| Skeleton Wreck | Shallow structure you can see from the surface | Coron Ultimate Tour |
| Siete Pecados | Reef fish and coral | Selected stop on some private Coron Island boat tours |
| Lusong Gunboat | Shallow wreck covered in marine life | Reef and Wreck tour |
| Lusong Coral Garden | Reef formations | Reef and Wreck tour |
| East Tangat | Historic submerged structure | Some Reefs & Wrecks routes |
| Pass Island | Beach and the water around it | Reef and Wreck tour |
Stop lists change with the operator and the sea state, so check the final itinerary before you book. Our Coron diving guide covers the same wrecks from a scuba diver's point of view.
Skeleton Wreck and a coral garden, with the famous lakes and lagoons on the same day.
The Ultimate Tour puts the shallow Skeleton Wreck and a coral-garden snorkel on the same boat day as Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon, which is why it is the sensible first choice when you have one day. Lunch and transfers are included. The reef stop varies between boats, and Siete Pecados is not on every departure, so check the stop list if a particular reef matters to you.
Both months are dry. Neither promises clear water.
At the Coron weather station, January averages 19.2 mm of rain across three rainy days and February 22.9 mm across two. Those figures are not water-clarity measurements. Recent rain, waves, currents and stirred-up sediment can leave one site clear and another murky on the same day, so be wary of any article that promises a fixed number of metres of visibility at Skeleton Wreck in either month.
Both months fall in the Amihan, the northeast monsoon, when chop can reach exposed reefs even under a blue sky. On the morning, ask the operator which sites suit the actual sea state. That tells you far more than a month-by-month visibility ranking. Our guides to Coron in January and Coron in February cover the rest of the trip in each month.
More ways to get in the water around Coron: snorkelling at Skeleton Wreck, the Lusong Gunboat and Lusong Coral Garden, reef stops at Siete Pecados and Pass Island, swimming in Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon and Barracuda Lake, wreck diving in Coron Bay, and beach days on Malcapuya and Ditaytayan.
One shallow wreck for snorkellers; most of the famous ones are for divers.
Skeleton Wreck is a good first wreck snorkel on a classic Coron Island day. When the water is clear, you can see its upper structure from the surface. PADI's site description puts the shallowest sections at around four metres, with the rest of the wreck lying deeper down the slope.
Not every famous Coron wreck can be snorkelled. The Irako, Akitsushima and Kogyo Maru are mainly deeper scuba dives, where you need certification and sometimes specialist wreck training. On an ordinary snorkel, do not touch, enter or swim through any wreck structure.
Pick by the other sites you want that day, not by which reef is "better".
A protected marine area known for reef fish and coral. Some custom Coron Island itineraries, such as a private boat hire where you pick the stops, offer it as an option.
Often paired with the shallow Lusong Gunboat on the western Reefs & Wrecks circuit, as on the shared Reef and Wreck tour. Its listing warns of a strong current here, which makes it a drift snorkel.
Neither reef is always clearer. On coral, keep enough distance that you never stand on or kick the reef, especially in fins. Sea turtles and other wildlife are possible in some areas, but nobody can promise them.
Lakes plus a wreck on a shared boat, or your own boat for the reefs.
The shared Coron Ultimate Tour (4.86 from 1,540 reviews, from $42) combines Skeleton Wreck and coral snorkelling with the famous lakes and lagoons. It is the sensible first choice when you have one day.
If you have already seen the landmarks, the private boat hire (4.93 from 810 reviews, $117 per group of up to two) is a bespoke boat for your group: you choose up to seven stops from the operator's list, or one of its fixed routes, which include a Reefs & Wrecks day covering Pass Island, the Lusong Gunboat, Lusong Coral Garden and East Tangat. Snorkel gear and entrance fees depend on the option you choose, so confirm both before you pay.
On a shared boat, the Reef and Wreck tour visits the Lusong Gunboat, Lusong Coral Garden and Pass Island. It has only 3.40 stars from 9 reviews, so read the recent feedback before you book it.
Viator also sells a shared Reefs & Wrecks tour, which has shown a non-refundable customer cancellation policy, and a "Tour D" alternative with a different itinerary and different cancellation wording. Read the current terms on whichever platform you use, because free cancellation is not guaranteed everywhere.
A beginner who swims well is not the same as a non-swimmer.
Open-water snorkelling in Coron means getting in from a boat, deep water, waves and sometimes currents. Tell the operator about limited swimming ability before you book. Wear the life jacket when it is required, stay with the guide, and stay out of the water if you feel dizzy or drowsy from medication.
A non-swimmer can still enjoy the viewpoints or a beach stop, but specialist Reefs & Wrecks tours sometimes restrict who can join. However good the underwater photos look, they cannot tell you that a particular site is safe for a child or an inexperienced swimmer on the day.
A dry month still has cancelled snorkel stops, and the reef needs your care.
Operators may skip an exposed snorkel stop, change the route or cancel the whole crossing. Follow the PAGASA marine warnings and the captain's instructions, and do not push for a snorkel stop just because the sun is out. Our Coron tour cancellations guide explains refunds.
Avoid touching coral, feeding marine life and entering wrecks. A well-run tour matters as much as a good itinerary: look for proper flotation gear, a briefing, a guide who watches the group in the water and clear rules.
